He gained prominence as the founder, songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist of Neutral Milk Hotel and as a co-founder of The Elephant 6 Recording Company. Mangum is noted for his complex, lyrically dense songwriting, particularly on the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
