The object in the museum catalogue
These maracas were made by Latin Percussion Inc. in Garfield, New Jersey, in 1999. They are “Macho Maracas” made of rawhide shells, with red stained wooden handles.
As indicated in an LP brochure from the period, “Like the LP Rawhide Maracas, LP Macho Maracas also feature natural rawhide shells and wooden handles. Their shells are wider than the LP Rawhide models and have a lacquered finish for a dry, yet lively sound. Sold in matched pairs, LP Macho Maracas have a full sound that is reminiscent of the early days of Latin music.”
