The object in the museum catalogue
The use of "X" to denote an unknown quantity has been common in mathematics from the eighteenth century. In 1908, the French playwright Alexandre Bisson wrote a play with the title "Madame X" featuring a woman who chose not to reveal her identity - hence known as Madame X. When this play was made into a Universal Pictures movie in the 1960s, the theme song used was Charles Wildman's "Swedish Rhapsody," now entitled "Love Theme From [sic] 'Madame X." The copyright dates on this sheet music for the piece are 1947 and 1948, the actual sheet music considerably later..
