William Hall (1796-1874) began his career as a musical instrument maker’s apprentice and by 1812 was employed by musical instrument maker Edward Riley. Hall formed his own business at Wooster Street in New York in 1820 and at the same time formed a partnership with fellow musical instrument maker, John Firth. By 1832, Hall and Firth were joined by Sylvanus Pond as Firth, Hall & Pond and became a prominent firm of music publishers, manufacturer of woodwinds, pianos, and guitars, and importer of musical goods. After the firm was dissolved in 1847, William Hall & Son continued separately until their company was acquired by Oliver Ditson in 1875.
