Lobby card for the 1952 movie The Pride of St. Louis. Directed by Harmon Jones, the film is a biography of baseball pitcher Jay “Dizzy” Dean, with Dean played by Dan Dailey, Richard Crenna as Dean’s brother “Daffy” and Joan Dru as his wife Patricia. The film’s screenplay, written by Herman J. Mankiewicz and Guy Trosper, was nominated for an Oscar.

A four-time All-Star, Dizzy Dean played Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals (1930, 1932-1937) and Chicago Cubs (1938-1941). He made a one-game novelty appearance at the end of the 1947 season for the St. Louis Browns, with whom he was a broadcaster. The 1934 National League MVP, Dean had a lifetime 150-83 win-loss record with 1,163 strikeouts. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
