Heavy Metal began publication in 1977. A licensee of the French periodical Métal Hurlant, it featured reprinted material, increasingly presenting original content. The magazine featured illustrated science fiction and fantasy stories intended for mature readers. The 1981 animated film it inspired, Heavy Metal, remains a cult classic.
