About the work
The LibriVox catalogue summary, preserved with the recording, reads:
LibriVox recording of Only a Dog; a Story of the Great War by Bertha Whitridge Smith. Read in English by Barry Eads. The touching true story of the faithfulness of an Irish Terrier as told through the eyes of the dog. When Germans invade his home during WWI, the dog runs off to look for his young master. He soon finds himself trapped in No Man's Land, injured by a bullet. British Private Peter Rice comes to his rescue, and thereafter “Army” (as the soldiers name him) follows Pete to the end, staying faithfully at his side until death. The book was written in 1917, during the great war, and while it's not graphic, it still talks about war, the injuries, the death, the sorrow. Great story, but recommended that if parents want to play this to their children, they listen to it first to judge whether their little ones are ready for the realities this book presents. - Summary by Barry Eads
