About the work
The LibriVox catalogue summary, preserved with the recording, reads:
LibriVox volunteers bring you 13 recordings of The Old Year by John Clare. This was the Weekly Poetry project for December 29, 2013. Read in English by Ann Simmons; Claudia Salto; David Lawrence; Ernst Pattynama; Garth Burton; Jason Mills; Joe Weinmunson; Julia Niedermaier; Lee Ann Howlett; Michael Keen; ravenotation; Stephen Perry; and Scott Birney. John Clare was an English poet, the son of a farm labourer, who came to be known for his celebratory representations of the English countryside and his lamentation of its disruption. His biographer Jonathan Bate states that Clare was "the greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced. No one has ever written more powerfully of nature, of a rural childhood, and of the alienated and unstable self". (Summary from Wikipedia )
