The day and year and place of his birth are still open to speculation. His family were probably Irish immigrants who left Ireland during the Great Potato Famine (1845-1852). At least one historian has argued for a partly Hispanic ancestry, pointing to Billy's fluency in Spanish and association with Hispanic people of the New Mexico Territory. However, Billy could have learned Spanish as a second language. By 1868, Billy's father had died. He and his brother and his mother, Catherine McCarty, moved to Indianapolis, Indiana . There she met William Antrim.
