Major Story Arcs The Devil May Care Lugey is a lieutenant in the Indianapolis Grendel Klan under the main leader, Hack . They run the Indianapolis 5000 race, an enormous event that brings together all the region's Grendel clans. Lugey and his fellow lieutenant, Skid , are old school. They believe the Klan is best run by being tough, and that nothing is more important than the clan. One day when they ride into the local hospital to find a fellow Grendel, a doctor ( Dana ) shoots Skid for being too aggressive in the hospital. Hack, stunningly, doesn't kill her, and instead apologizes. His feeling is that he needs a good hospital in the area, so he's willing to cut her some slack, but Lugey and Skid see this as the beginning of a streak of weakness in Hack. Hack also ends up falling in love with the doctor, making things worse.
