Melody was introduced in the Josie stories of the 1960s as one of Josie's friends. Her beauty managed to turn the heads of most males, on occasion causing Josie to feel jealous. She was never supposed to be very bright, speaking in a sing-song voice, indicated by musical notes added to her word balloons. Her dialogue often included silly jokes but also the occasional sharp witticism. Melody is the supposedly naive member of the band and her friends have tried to shelter her on occasion. But she often proves a master of persuasion and is the one to offer solutions to situations.
