George Baker the main character “The Sad Sack” was never given a name, the term sad sack being not a name but an Army term for misfits who just didn’t not seem to belong in the Army, but because of the war effort where showing up in the thousands, and were referred to as sad sacks of %&#@ As originally depicted Sad Sack never spoke, and just stumbled as best he could through one military situation after another. Immediately popular there was even a hardcover collection of the strips published before the end of the war. After the war, Sad Sack was bought to the world of comics by Harvey and his adventures became lass military grade and more kid oriented.
