He is sometimes serious and a bit frightened, like when he was trying to cross a bottomless pit. Smiley let in a rat creature, which he named it Bartleby . He is shown to care for Bartleby, as he is seen to pass out because he refused to eat and let Bartleby eat his rations, thus giving him not enough energy to move.
