The work and its context
The museum's open-access catalogue describes the work:
This dark landscape is difficult to parse due to its shaded and overlapping forms. Peets was a skilled printmaker who practiced many techniques but avoided experimentation, preferring to perfect his art in the established tradition. This image suggests this practice in its use of mezzotint: the various layers blend together and add softness around the edges of forms that evoke wilderness during the late hours of the day.
