Berthe Morisot with a Muff (c. 1871–72): Art, History and Details
Berthe Morisot with a Muff at the Cleveland Museum of Art: c. 1871–72, oil on canvas. Explore the work's context, creator attribution and collection history.

Berthe Morisot with a Muff (c. 1871–72) is in the Cleveland Museum of Art collection. The museum's creator attribution is Édouard Manet (French, 1832–1883).
The work and its context
The museum's open-access catalogue describes the work:
This is one of two portraits Manet painted of Morisot dressed for winter in a heavy coat and feathered hat. (See Berthe Morisot with a Half Veil, also in this gallery.) Manet’s wide brushstrokes and crosshatchings, which describe areas of shadow, evoke the sketchy quality of Morisot’s own paintings, likely Manet’s nod to his subject’s identity as an artist.
